Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
CAPS is pleased to announce that our application to the US Department of Education for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in East Asian Studies has been funded.
PURPOSE
This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to
undergraduate and graduate students in foreign language and either area or international
studies. The goals of the fellowship program include:
- to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies;
- to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and
- to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for a FLAS Fellowship, you must meet the following criteria:
- be a citizen or eligible permanent resident of the United States;
- be a student in good standing at the University of Oregon or have been accepted for admission to the UO;
- show potential for high academic achievement; and
- demonstrate long-term interest in East Asia;
The Academic Year FLAS Fellowships provide payment of program tuition and mandatory fees, plus a living stipend of $15,000. Academic Year FLAS recipients must be enrolled in a full-time program of study that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies, or with the international aspects of professional fields of study.
2009-10 Academic Year FLAS Deadline: February 12, 2010
The 2010 Summer FLAS Fellowships provide payment of program
tuition and mandatory fees, plus a living stipend of $2,500. Summer
FLAS recipients must be enrolled in a full-time intensive language
program equivalent to an academic year course, which requires at
least 140 credit or contact hours and a minimum of six weeks in
length.
