Howard Davis has worked on housing and urban development in south India, and oversaw the establishment of ILLAM, The Centre for People's Housing/Tamil Nadu, a collaboration between the Center for Housing Innovation, University of Oregon, the Centre for Development Madras (Madras, India), and Pacific Architecture (Sydney, Australia). With ILLAM, Professor Davis worked on a new village of 136 houses for cycle-rickshaw drivers in Vellore, Tamil Nadu state. This project utilized knowledge of local customs for development of the settlement plan, and allowed families to design their own houses. Professor Davis has lectured extensively on housing and development in India, and has taught at the School of Architecture and Planning in New Delhi. Professor Davis was recently awarded funding for his proposal entitled, “Cities in War, Struggle, and Peace: The Architecture of Memory and Life,” by the Savage Endowment of Peace for the 2006-2008 academic years. His expectant book Living Above the Store (tentative title) will explore “the architecture and urbanism of places that have been affected by war, and relationships between vernacular and contemporary architecture.”
