Michael Hibbard's main research interest is socio-economic development
problems of agricultural and resource-based communities, as they make the
transition to a more diverse and sustainable local and regional economy. He
specializes in comparative studies of rural areas and small towns in
industrialized nations, regional sustainable development, and
conservation-based development. One of his current projects is a
comparative study of indigenous communities and natural resource management
in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S. He has also conducted
research in Japan, Fiji, Malaysia, South Korea, and Switzerland. His
recent publications include: The Split Personality of
Planning: Indigenous Peoples and Planning for Land Use and Resource
Management, Journal of Planning Literature (2008); Wildland Fire
Management as Conservation-Based Development: A New Opportunity for
Reservation Communities?, Society and Natural Resources (2007); Doing It
for Themselves: Transformative Planning by Indigenous Peoples, Journal of
Planning Education and Research (2005); and Sustainable Community
Development: A social Approach to Vietnam, Journal of the Community
Development Society (2004). Professor Hibbard is currently the President of
the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, the national
organization of schools of city and regional planning in the U.S.
