Stephen Kohl specializes in modern Japanese literature and Japanese castaway narratives. Professor Kohl teaches Introduction to Japanese Literature, basho and haiku poetry and castaway narratives. He published World of Literature in 1999 and translated Tachihara Masaaki’s Wind and Stone in 1992. In 1996 he received the Asia Society award for outreach to middle schools. Professor Kohl was the director of the Japan Study Center at Waseda University in 2005.
