Robert Kyr is the composer of more than 90 works, including nine symphonies, three violin concerti, three chamber symphonies, and numerous works for choruses of all types, as well as music for non-Western instruments. His works have been commissioned by a wide range of institutions and organizations including the NEA, Meet the Composer, Chamber Music America, Chase Foundation (Boston), Telarc International, Oregon Humanities Center, Oregon Arts Commission, Schnitzer CARE Foundation, and Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities. In addition, Dr. Kyr is director of the Vanguard Concert and Workshop Series, Music Today Festival, and the Composers Symposium of the Oregon Bach Festival. In the area of intercultural studies, he is the founder and director of the Pacific Rim Gamelan, a cross-cultural performing arts ensemble that includes a Balinese gamelan (gong kebyar) as its core instrumentation. Each year, the group presents a concert series, during which it premieres at least ten new works for gamelan orchestra. CDs of Kyr’s music currently available include: Unseen Rain (New Albion NA 075), The Passion according to Four Evangelists (New Albion NA 098), Celestial Light: Music by Hildegard von Bingen and Robert Kyr (Telarc CD 80456), and The Fourth River: The Millennium Revealed (Telarc CD 80534). His three violin concerti will be released on New Albion (NA 126) in fall 2005.
