Charles Lachman specializes in art theory and the history of Buddhist art, especially in China, though his research and teaching occasionally extend to India, Japan, and Korea as well. His publications include The Ten Symbols of Longevity (UW Press, 2006), A Way With Words: The Calligraphic Art of Jung Do-jun (UW Press, 2006), and Evaluations of Sung Dynasty Painters of Renown (E.J. Brill, 1990), as well as articles that have appeared in Artibus Asiae, Art Bulletin, Asia Major, Journal of the American Oriental Society, Korean Culture, Clues, and elsewhere. A former director of CAPS, professor Lachman also served for many years as the curator of Asian art at the UO’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum, where he organized numerous exhibitions and installations including “True Views: Traditions of Korean Painting,” “Buddhist Visions,” “Ukiyo-e Outside In,” and “Binh Danh: In the Eclipse of Angkor.”
