John Lukacs is a biological anthropologist specializing in the bioarchaeology of ancient India, paleopathology, dental anthropology and human evolution. His fieldwork focuses on prehistoric human remains from Stone Age and Bronze Age cultures of India and Pakistan. Recent publications have appeared in Current Anthropology (Oct. 2008) and in edited volumes on Ancient Health (2007, University Press of Florida) and The Evolution and History of Human Populations in South Asia (2007, Springer Verlag). His field research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the American Institute of Indian Studies, the LSB Leakey Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. Current research focuses on the skeletal adaptations and pathological conditions of early Holocene Mesolithic hunting and foraging people of the Ganga Plain, including the analysis of activity patterns, health status and nutrition. A monographic report, entitled Holocene Foragers of North India, is nearing completion for British Archaeological Reports (2009, Archaeopress). Beyond South Asia, his dental research interests include the analysis of variation in dental morphology and the comparative investigation of differences in prevalence of developmental enamel defects as indicators of physiological stress in living and prehistoric humans as well as in apes (2009, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2009) and fossil hominoids (2001, Journal of Human Evolution).
