William Ayres specializes in archaeology, prehistoric architecture and settlement patterns, and the ethnology of Oceania and Southeast Asia. He has done fieldwork in Pohnpei, Micronesia, Thailand, American Samoa, and Easter Island. Among his publications are “Definition, Ownership and Conservation of Indigenous Landscapes at Salapwuk, Pohnpei, Micronesia” in The Archaeology and Anthropology of the Landscape: Shaping Your Landscape, (1998); “Easter Island Obsidian Artifacts: Typology and Use-wear” in Easter Island Archaeology: Research on Early Rapanui Culture, (1998); Geiseler's Easter Island: An 1880's Anthropological Account of Rapa Nui, (1995). Dr. Ayres was a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand and received a 3-year research grant for Pohnpei archaeology from the National Endowment of the Humanities. In 1997, he worked with the Historic Preservation Training Project in Palau, Micronesia.
