Barbara Setsu Pickett has been the curricular coordinator for the Fibers Area and its primary instructor since 1975. Although velvet weaving is the main focus of her research and creative work, she is also interested in Japanese art forms such as velvet carving, the braiding technique of kumihimo, the stencil cutting technique katazome, and bookbinding. She has studied velvet weaving in Italy, France, England, Japan and China. Pickett’s review, “Story of the Kimono” was published in Fiber Arts in 1990. In August 2003, she was the artist-in-residence at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. In the fall of 2002, Professor Pickett was awarded the Bellagio Fellowship through the Rockefeller Foundation. With funding from the UO Summer Research awards, she was able to research the textile arts in Japan in 1989 and China in 1999. Her velvet weaving Sempre Diritto II was chosen for award of merit by the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts at the prestigious Crafts National 36.
