Richard M. Steers’ areas of expertise are cross-cultural management and employee motivation and performance. He researches new models for assessing national cultures as they relate to organization and management, new directions for work motivation theory and corporate strategies for enhancing employee commitment in today’s changing economy. His recent publications include: Managing in the Global Economy, (2005); “The Future of Work Motivation Theory” in Academy of Management Review, (2004); Motivation and Work Behavior, (2003); “Culture, Motivation and Work Behavior” in Handbook of Cross-Cultural Management, (2001). Professor Steers has held numerous positions at the University of Oregon and abroad. He was the former vice provost for international affairs, former associate director of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and has served as a visiting professor in Korea, Denmark, Netherlands, and South Africa. He serves on the editorial board of Journal of World Business, Journal of International Management, Management Review, (Germany) Asia Pacific HRM (Australia) and Asia Pacific Business Journal (U.K.). Dr. Steers was the founder of the University of Oregon’s International Business Program, one of the key constituents of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. He is the past president of Academy of Management and a fellow of both the American Psychological Society and the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He is the recipient of the 2002 teaching excellence award from the LCB Business Advisory Council and the 2001 teaching excellence award from the UO Mortar Board Society.
