Professor Su’s areas of interest cover cultural politics, tourism, and urban heritage. His current research investigates the politics of heritage tourism in the ancient town of Lijiang, focusing on the radical transition of China after 1978. Specifically, his work explores how the practices of dominance and resistance have shaped, and been affected by Lijiang’s socio-spatial transformation as this World Heritage site becomes increasingly exposed to global capitalistic tendencies arising from tourism. His research examines issues of representation, commodification, spatial inclusion and exclusion, and identity building in a global-national-local nexus. His new research project is going to focus on regionalization in Greater Mekong Sub-region to unravel how the nation states in this region mobilize space for economic growth and political stability. His recent publications include the forthcoming book The Politics of Heritage Tourism in China: A Review from Lijiang published by Rougledge’s China studies series; “Tourism Politics in Lijiang, China: An Analysis of State and Local Interactions in Tourism Development” in Tourism Geography (2008).
