Yugen Wang’s academic interests are classical Chinese poetry and poetics, with a special focus on the conditions of reading and writing in medieval China (defined broadly as from the Six Dynasties to the Northern Song). He earned his master's degree at Peking University in 1995 and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 2005. He is currently finishing a book manuscript entitled "Ten Thousand Scrolls: Reading and Writing in Huang Tingjian (1045-1105) and the Late Northern Song," which is based on his Ph.D. dissertation. He has published extensively in Chinese-language academic journals. His most recent English-language publication, entitled "Shige: The Popular Poetics of Regulated Verse," published in T'ang Studies, is an article on the poetry manuals of the Tang and the Five Dynasties period.
