Professor Buck is interested in the mutual constitutions of society, space, and nature. His work integrates political economy, development and agrarian studies, political ecology, urban studies, economic geography, and East Asian and Chinese studies. He is currently researching urban-rural production networks in the Shanghai regional economy, and the globalization of supply systems of food and agricultural resources in China and East Asia. His book manuscript, “Constructing China’s Capitalism, Connecting Shanghai’s Urban and Rural Industries” is under review; publications in high profile journals explore how industrial network restructuring changed country and city in Shanghai; China’s urbanization and transition to capitalism through the prism of 19th-century Europe and America; peak oil through the relationship between natural resources, technology change, and capitalism; the agrarian roots of flexible production networks in Taiwan; and the political economy of organic agriculture.
