Shankha Chakraborty is a growth and development economist and has been studying the role of financial markets in developing countries. Some empirical work in recent years has uncovered a robust and positive relationship between financial development and economic well being. Professor Chakraborty researches economic mechanisms that relate financial development to economic growth. Recent publications include: “Endogenous Lifetimes and Economic Growth” in Journal of Economic Theory, (forthcoming); “Bank Finance versus Market Finance: A Growth Perspective”, mimeo, (2001); “Financial Architecture and Economic Development,” mimeo, (2001); “Costly Intermediation and the Poverty of Nations,” mimeo, (2001). In future research, he plans to investigate the nature of innovations that different types of financial systems promote and the design of financial systems in developing countries.
