Visiting Scholars

CAPS J-1 Visa Paperwork Services

CAPS assists UO faculty with the administration of J-1 visiting scholar invitations, courtesy appointments, and DS-2019 paperwork by collaborating with the Human Resources and the International Student and Scholar Services at UO.

UO faculty wishing to sponsor a visiting scholar can submit their request using the link below. The current estimated processing time for the courtesy appointment and DS-2019 paperwork is between 1.5 and 2 months. We recommend submitting the request well in advance of the visitor’s intended arrival date.

CAPS Administrative Fee: $500

This fee covers CAPS staff’s administrative costs for processing J-1 paperwork, assisting visiting scholars with obtaining a UO ID and email, conducting orientation on-campus resources, and providing initial printing or copying services. It also includes access to all CAPS-organized or sponsored events.

CAPS J-1 Visiting Scholar Professional Development Program

The CAPS J-1 Visiting Scholar Professional Development Program is designed to support visiting scholars during their academic sabbatical at the University of Oregon. Participants will be paired with a UO faculty mentor whose research and teaching interests align with theirs. Mentors will hold periodic research meetings, offer access to class visits, and facilitate integration into the academic community. Additionally, participants will receive assistance in enhancing their academic English—both spoken and written—as well as mentoring for conference presentations and paper submissions.

The program also offers comprehensive logistical assistance, including help with visa applications, airport pickup, housing searches, and move-in support, as well as guidance with banking and utilities. Participants will have access to printers and other resources, and CAPS staff will be available for ongoing logistical support as needed.

Program Fees:

6-month: $5,500
12-month: $7,500
